As Bingo Dies, So Too Does Fleetwood Pier

From 1965 till 2000 Bingo was a very popular pastime. In fact bingo is what kept the Fleetwood Pier alive, but when the bingo died so did the pier and now it is nothing but a smouldering wreck after a fire erupted on the pier. The Fleetwood pier has now been boarded up, pending the investigation regarding the cause of the fire. Arson has been suspected but the fire report will only tell.

The previous owner of the Fleetwood pier said that local people were needed to support it, while bingo was running on the pier this support was forthcoming, he just didn’t know what to do with it. The pier was costing him a great deal of money after the bingo left, but while it was running he had 37 very happy years on the pier. He loved it!

The current owner of the pier is a property developer and he is now reviewing his plans to build 80 apartments. As well as the fire, there have also been public objections to the erection of the apartments; residents feel it is important for the pier to be saved.

I can’t help but feel if residents want to save the pier, they should petition for a bingo club to be opened on it. If bingo worked in the past to draw customers to the Fleetwood pier, and create a pleasure environment, then surely this could work again in the future.
