Due to a District councilor getting involved in a social club re-development, an important part of the live of the elderly at Alexander gardens has been saved, their bingo. Councillor Mike Soley recently held talks with the managers of Festival Housing, they had plans to redevelop the bingo and social club that elderly people depended upon for their entertainment. They actually wanted to build a retirement village on the site.
Thankfully, because of the intervention of Cllr. Soley, loyal bingo player, Pete Lewis no longer has to worry; the plans to re-develop the bingo and social club have been cancelled. Pete said that Cllr. Soley had mad a lot of elderly people very happy. For some of them, their only social activity is their regular bingo games. Festival housing has not yet heard whether the National Health Service had approved their plans for the ₤3.8 million re-development, but fortunately that does not matter any longer!
It is really sad when you hear of stories such as these, local bingo clubs are closing down all over the UK and this game is really important to many elderly people who do not have, or are unable to take part in other socially stimulating activities. It is scientifically known that bingo in the UK is vital to interaction for the elderly.
